TIC

Trout-in-the-Classroom Underway for 2009-2010
The success of the TIC program can be attributed to the combined effort of several organizations and many individuals dedicated to the environment. During the early part of the year and ongoing into the Summer and Fall months, Jessica Griglak, NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, Resource Interpretive Specialist, was working on gathering new schools for the TIC Program.

Jersey Shore TU member Maurice Mahler, has been keeping watch on the NYS plans for the Connetquot hatchery which is closed down.  He is asking that you (that is each of you) send a letter requesting the NY Parks Directorate keep Connetquot hatchery in place.

  Address your letter to:

Carol Ash Dir NYS parks &Rec.
 Agency bldg 1,
Empire State Plaza
Albany NY 12238

Also google "Friends of the Connetquot" web site to get all the up to date info.  Also a tour by Gil on You Tube they can get that on you tube - Connetquot hatchery.

For some background on the history of Connetquot see the Trout Unlimited's  summer 2003 edition of Trout.

In 1866 the South Side Sportsman's club built several trout hatcheries.  The land was sold to NYS in 1973 and Connetquot River State Park opened.  The Connetquot hatchery is considered the site of the first attempt to artificially propagate brown trout in America.  Amidst a sprawling metropolitan area, Connetquot River State Park is an oasis of what the Long Island landscape looked like in colonial times.  I thank Robert Behnke for this information.

 Sincerely
Maurice

Fish and Wildlife Freshwater Stocking meeting - Feb 14

The F&W reported that sales of fishing license and trout stamps in 2008 was down by 70,000 from 2007.  For 2008, 160,000 fresh water fishing license and 56,000 trout stamps were sold.
Comments from the floor about people following the stocking trucks and how some fishermen's almost taking the trout out of the nets as they were being carried to the water.  As distasteful as that practice is, we were reminded that the 570,000 stocked trout are there for the public to catch and keep, unless otherwise regulated, thus the only violations are no license or exceeding the limit.  Being stupid is not a violation.

For Monmouth and Ocean County waters here is part of the spring stocking plan. There are more small ponds that get trout but I'm not sure where they are. Direction to these and other trout stocked waters can be found at:  www.njfishandwildlife.com/accesscnty.htm

JSTU Open House Planning Under Way
JSTU is in the initial planning stages for a hosting an Open House event to be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the usual Fireman's Field meeting location. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to learn about cold water fisheries conservation, fly fishing, and outdoor awareness from JSTU members. There will be educational displays, fly tying and casting, special activities for kids, and more. We will be needing lots of help from volunteers to make this happen, so start thinking about how you can contribute. Contact Duane or Bob for additional information.
