TIC

Trout-in-the-Classroom Underway for 2009-2010
The success of the TIC program can be attributed to the combined effort of several organizations and many individuals dedicated to the environment. During the early part of the year and ongoing into the Summer and Fall months, Jessica Griglak, NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, Resource Interpretive Specialist, was working on gathering new schools for the TIC Program.

A JSTU Fishing Day

What: The Jersey Shore TU 2010 - Spring Opener.

Where:  S/Branch Raritan, The Claremont Trout Conservation Area Stretch, Long Valley NJ.  Meet at the Morris County parking lot off of Fairview road, Long Valley around 9 AM.

When:    April  24  2010.   Note: Stocking of the TCA and the SB Raritan is done Tuesday, April -May.

Trip Coordinator:  Duane Lloyd// This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it // 732 267 3314

Special Instructions:  Bring your lunch and drinks as there are no deli's or lunch spots in Long Valley.  The Claremont Trout Conservation Area (TCA) is a year round TCA and only artificial lures may be used. Spin fishing rigs and fly fishing rigs using only artificial lures allowed by the NJ F&W.  Fishing is permitted during the in-season stocking closure.

Directions: Get to Long Valley then in Long Valley, at the "light" intersection route 24, go north on Schooley's Mt. Rd.  After crossing the bridge over the S/B Raritan River take immediate right (about 200 ft - gas station), on Fairview for approx 1 mile to a Morris County parking lot on the right side.  After suiting up and rigging up then follow the Gillette Trail (we are now walking please) to the improved road, part of the Columbia trail along the river and then go left until TCA signs on trees, then down to river.  Also you can go up stream or down stream for additional trails or paths down to river.   The Gillette or Columbia trail is located primarily on the former Central Railroad of the New Jersey-Central division of the High Bridge Line.

The S/B of the Raritan, Claremont TCA section is clear, cool, shallow, flat and lazy with slight ripples, no large or even mid size rocks in mid stream. Not many deep holes or pockets and some down timber on the side but there are some large log jams across the stream at several places.  Water level (in Oct & Nov) was around 20 inches so wading is easy but due to the rocky bottom, spiked boots are helpful. The Claremont TCA extends from the downstream end of the posted Anglers Anonymous Property to its junction with Electric Brook (approx 1.1 mile).

JSTU Open House Planning Under Way
JSTU is in the initial planning stages for a hosting an Open House event to be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the usual Fireman's Field meeting location. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to learn about cold water fisheries conservation, fly fishing, and outdoor awareness from JSTU members. There will be educational displays, fly tying and casting, special activities for kids, and more. We will be needing lots of help from volunteers to make this happen, so start thinking about how you can contribute. Contact Duane or Bob for additional information.
